How to Get There:

You can take the road and book a trip with African Safari Kenya from Kampala.

Air: You can fly to three airfields near the park from Entebbe or Kampala.

How to spend your time and see gorillas! You’ll never forget the thrill of meeting mountain gorillas for the first time. Keep in mind, though, that the paths through the trees to get to these strange animals can be steep and sometimes slippery. You might have to hike for hours to get there, so you might want to pay about $15 US to have a porter take your daypack.

There are several parts of this trail where you can look for gorillas.

Buhoma: Three groups of gorillas can be found in the northwest corner of the park. This is the first part of the park where gorilla trekking started, so there is a lot of tourist equipment here. A lot of people also like it because the gorillas are easy to get to—sometimes in less than an hour.

Ruhija: There are three more groups of gorillas in the northeast part of the park. You can also choose from a number of places to stay.

Nkuringo: There is only one family of gorillas here, but there are a lot of them. In the southern part of the park, this is a difficult trail.

Forest Walks: The Uganda Wildlife Authority leads these half-day walks, which cost around $30 US. Just like its name suggests, the Waterfall Trail takes you through a lush forest to three beautiful waterfalls. Virunga mountains and the western Rift Valley can be seen in awe from the Muzabijiro Loop Trail. Monkeys and chimpanzees are likely to be seen on your hike.

Walks with other people: Go for a walk along the forest edges to see the towns of Buhoma and Nkuringo and meet the Batwa (Pygmy) and Bakiga people who live there. Discover their history and way of life as guides explain how they have lived in the forest for a very long time.
