What do you know about the biggest intact volcanic caldera in the world? People who go on safari often use words like “beautiful,” “amazing,” and “breathtaking” to describe the Ngorongoro Crater. There are over 25,000 large animals that live in the Ngorongoro Crater, which is a unique and thriving world full of colorful habitats.
The “Big Five” animals of Africa live in a small area (264 sq. km or 101 sq. mi) that is home to this World Heritage Site and “Eighth Wonder of the World.” It may be the best place to see all of them. Tomorrow could be the most exciting day in Africa, if not the whole world.
We’ll Go Down the Crater Wall
If you stand on the edge of the Crater, you can see a colorful universe below that is cut off from the rest of the land. And as you go down the crater wall’s steep 2,000-foot wall, you’ll find yourself in a land with forests, marshes, grasslands, and lakes, each with its own unique animals.
Wildlife like baboons, monkeys, waterbucks, and great tusker bull elephants will greet us in the Lerai Forest, which is full of acacia trees. And sometimes lions.
We’ll go to Lake Magdi, where thousands of bright pink flamingos have gathered at the base of an extinct volcano. Hippos will ask us to lunch at Ngoitoktok Springs, which is a great place for a picnic.
The Prairies
The fields are another large habitat down here on the crater floor. They are home to thousands of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles. Along these fields, we’ll also be looking for buffalo and serval cats.
Along the way, we’ll always be on the lookout for lions, though, because the crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see them on the hunt or taking a break after a long day of hunting.
The large number and variety of birds at Ngorongoro should not be missed. We will look for raptors like the augur hawk, tawny eagle, and white-backed vulture, as well as egrets, ostriches, firefinches, and more birds of prey.
And if all those bright shapes weren’t enough, we’ll climb back up the crater walls in the late afternoon to see one of Ngorongoro’s famous sunsets from the edge. A stunning end to this wonderful one-day tour.
